Tamara Slobodkin grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where she started her early interest in piano lessons. She continued studies at Oberlin College, and eventually married Lawrence B. Slobodkin, professor of Ecology and Evolution, and took up residence in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1969, she moved with her husband to Stony Brook, New York, where she started the North Shore Pro Musica chamber ensemble and performed regularly on both piano and harpsichord. She also started her own piano studio, teaching students of all ages but specializing in intermediate and advanced students, while also expanding her own musical interests studying with Martin Kanin of the State University of New York, Elizabeth Moschetti (noted for her work with Taubman technique), and Edna Golansky.

An interest in civil rights and social services has always been a major theme in her life, and continues to be so.
